The argan tree (Argania spinosa) is an ancient, drought-resistant tree that grows exclusively in the southwestern region of Morocco. An essential part of the ecosystem, its deep roots help prevent desertification and soil erosion. The tree has thorny branches and produces a small, oval-shaped fruit containing a hard kernel, from which the precious argan oil is extracted.

Argan oil: liquid gold

Argan oil is nicknamed "liquid gold" due to its rarity and valuable properties. The oil extraction process is laborious and is done by hand using traditional methods passed down by Amazigh women for centuries. There are two main types of argan oil:

 * Edible argan oil: The kernels are roasted before being pressed, giving the oil a distinctive nutty flavor. It is used in Moroccan cuisine for dipping bread, making amlou (a mixture of argan oil, almonds, and honey), and in tagine.

 * Cosmetic argan oil: Cold-pressed without roasting, this oil is rich in beneficial compounds and widely used in skin and hair care products.

Argan tree locations

The argan tree grows naturally in a specific area of Morocco, specifically the Souss-Massa region between the cities of Essaouira and Agadir. In 1998, UNESCO declared a vast area of this region, approximately 2.5 million hectares, an argan biosphere reserve, with the aim of protecting these trees and the traditional cultural practices associated with them.
